We dog and puppy parents want nothing but the best for our fur-children. We treat them with utmost care from the day are born. Every item on the vaccine list is crossed out and every scheduled check up is met. It’s not a shocker that when our babies fall sick, we reach out to the person we trust the most—our vets.
The same is true for a pet owner In New Jersey who visited Rutherford Animal hospital for a simple tick and flea relief for their boy, Lokum.
However, what initially was just an ordinary trip to the vet ended in a nightmare when the hospital administered Simparica Flea and Tick medication without any warning. The dog now suffers seizures about 10 to 11 times every month. Simparica, as it turns out, has a side effect on some dogs that causes them to have seizures.
The dog owners took it to Facebook to raise awareness on having pets treated with tick and flea medication which may involve Simparica.
It is too soon to state an accurate number of dogs that have been affected. However, between the release date of March 2016 and Jul 2016, there had been 26 cases where dogs suffered seizures as a primary side effect of this drug.
Health officials are alerting pet owners and veterinarians of this incident. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the drugs are in the isoxazoline class and include Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica.
Although there has been no therapeutic claim as of yet, CBD is being considered as a possible treatment for dogs suffering the horrible side effects of the tick and flea medication.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKCCHF) recently announced a major clinical trial to study CBD as a treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy in dogs. Dr. Diane Brown, the chief executive officer of the AKC Canine Health Foundation, and Dr. Stephanie McGrath, veterinary neurologist at Colorado State University and the principal investigator for the AKCCHF are dedicating research to solidify this theory.
