Debunking the Myths About Pet Stains and Odors

There are many myths out there about pet stains and odors.

Dogs young and old are capable of having accidents in our homes, leaving us with smelly odors and unsightly stains. In our attempts to remove the stains and odors, we often turn to the internet, where we’re inundated with DIY tricks and tips that promise success and great results. Unfortunately, many of those tips and tricks just don’t work. Even worse, some of them even make the problem worse! That’s why we’ve set out to debunk the many myths about pet stains and odors, and to help you find a better solution with our one-of-a-kind puppy mats.

Myth #1. Baking soda will do the trick.

Baking soda is a tried and true mixture that is used to clean just about anything in most homes, but where pet odors are concerned, it’s not the golden goose it is claimed to be. Baking soda, which is famed for its ability to remove odors, doesn’t actually remove odors at all — it merely absorbs them — and it won’t do anything to get rid of the source for the odor. Not to mention, any baking soda still left over in the carpet can cause friction, which can actually cause permanent damage to your floor.

Myth #2. Removing a stain is pointless since your dog keeps going in the same spot anyway.

Before we debunk this myth, you need to understand why dogs go again and again in the same spot in the first place. You see, a dog’s urine has ammonia in it, and the scent of that ammonia gets stronger and stronger as the urine dries, enticing your dog to keep going on the same spot again and again. Unfortunately, the vast majority of carpet cleaning products also contain ammonia, which is why a dog will keep going on the same spot even after it’s been cleaned. The trick to preventing your dog from going time and time again in the same spot is simply to eliminate the ammonia during the cleaning process, and that takes a special kind of carpet cleaning product.

Myth #3. You can use any household product to get rid of a stain.

As we mentioned when we debunked the last myth, most of the common carpet cleaning products you find in stores contain ammonia or vinegar. And, when your dog smells that ammonia in the stain, it entices them to go on the same spot again, forcing you to clean the same spot once again. Not only are ammonia- and/or vinegar-based cleaners ineffective at properly getting out a pet stain, but they can actually make a stain much worse since they do nothing to prevent the dog from going in that spot again!
